The Greene County Lamb Producers celebrated the successes of county lamb exhibitors and raised money to support their efforts at their annual banquet and auction March 10 at Clover Hall on the Greene County Fairgrounds.
Close to 100 Lamb Producers and their families and friends, and the families of 4-H members in the lamb project attended.
After a lamb dinner catered by Hy-Vee, Lamb Producer Dr Steve Karber began the program honoring the late Dr David Decker, a longtime member of the Lamb Producers board. Decker and his wife Donna served as sheep superintendents for the county fair for many years.
Karber then talked briefly about the community lamb barn project which provides 4-H members who don’t have a place or equipment to raise livestock an opportunity to learn the lessons that come with the responsibility of caring for animals.
The 16 4-H members who showed champions at the 2017 Greene County Fair were recognized and given photo plaques.
The final business of the evening was a fundraising auction of trophy plaques for the 2018 county fair, home décor items, and homemade baked goods.
The champion market lamb plaque brought the highest bid – $300 from Peoples Trust & Savings Bank. The most coveted dessert item was a French silk pie made by Kerry Brooker that brought in $120.
The Lamb Producers auction off the program cover for the coming year as a final auction item. Greenbrier Quilts purchased the 2019 cover for $125.
Auctioneer Kevin Lentz coaxed a total of $3,020 from bidders during the auction. The funds raised will support the community lamb barn project in 2018.
